Black Scoter.In early spring females often get fairly extensive amounts of yellow/orange on the bill.They have only a little in the fall.

There were several estimates of Half a million Scoter at Cape May Point 03/04.How do you count that many? 6000 birds per minute (which looks like this) for two hours and that gets you close.

Black Scoter. Surfs are slightly larger and noticeably slimmer and less pot-bellied, with longer more pointed wings. The white nape and bill shape is usually obvious at fairly long range.
