WARBLERS - the love of my life!
Cape May Warbler 'in-red'.Size and structure is the be all and end all of Warbler (and all) bird identification. Birds have the same size and structure all year so why focus on the many plumages, their variations, lighting conditions etc.

Cape May Warbler.Amounts of streaking, yellow and wing bars are very variable. They are good to use - but only with the constants!

Common Yellowthroat. Short wings (weakish flyer)because it is a short distance migrant. If flushed it weakly drags its tail behind it.The long winged Connecticut(long distance migrant)would fly very fast and purposefully.

Palm Warbler.Behaviour (and probability) are also very important. If a bird was on the ground with this birds exact size and structure and it was pumping its tail, it would not matter if were pink and purple all over, it would still be a Palm Warbler.

Proportions - pot belly, small head and fine slightly downcurved bill (more obvious in the field). Thank goodness I wasn't looking for yellow and streaks or we might never have known it was a Cape May Warbler.

Cape May Warbler. If you think you can identify the bird because of plumage always double check with size and structure to make sure. This will eliminate most misidetifications.
